SCAD’s mascot, Art the Bee, made a surprise visit at Charles R. Drew Charter School last Friday afternoon. Art danced in the cafeteria for students ranging from the third to fifth grades. SCAD Savannah’s Drumline and the band Purely Acoustik performed, and several volunteers were in attendance.

The purpose behind the appearance was an even bigger surprise for the students and teachers. Each month Sojourner Marable Grimmett, senior on-campus admission representative, selects a school in need of supplies. SCAD students donate those goods and make the delivery — the Buzz Bus program.

“We selected Drew because of their dedicated administration staff and teachers. Drew art teachers, Collins Anderson and Nicole Bonadonna, were overwhelmed with joy,” Grimmett said. The donation included sketch books, drawing paper, Bristol boards, colored pencils, crayons, sidewalk chalk, markers, graphite pencils, watercolors and pastels.

“It’s great having extra resources,” Anderson said, especially when school budgets are being cut. Anderson has taken community education classes at SCAD Atlanta and hopes to attend graduate school. She is enthusiastic about the university and promoting the arts. As Grimmett put it, Anderson is “a true ambassador of the college.”

Carol Hollis, a third grade teacher, added, “The kids get exposure to a school that encourages things other than reading and writing.”

“The enthusiasm and energy that students get interacting with SCAD staff, students and faculty, whether we’re assisting them in drawing a picture, taking a photo or simply dancing along with them to SCAD’s drumline, just warms my heart. It’s about encouraging students to dream big and achieve,” Grimmett said.

Drew Charter School serves more than 800 students from pre-kindergarten though eighth grade and promotes high academic achievement and character development.
