Over 1,700 entries were submitted to the 4th annual SCADDY Awards, an event that honors SCAD students’ achievement in ten majors including advertising, graphic design, illustration, photography and animation.

A panel composed of top industry professionals assessed student’s work. The judges were Rick Anwal, independent designer and owner of Anwal Ltd. LLC; Ed Dye, creative director of Artistic Image Inc.; Karen Gold, senior graphic designer of CARE USA; Bill Mayer, award-winning illustrator; and Jeff Stewart, senior art director with Grey Advertising of Atlanta.

Vanessa Lo, a graduate student in advertising, won under the Print, Communication Arts Magazine Ad category. She came up with the ad idea after seeing a magic show. “The word ‘amazing’ inspired me to come up with the concept ‘Amazing things can happen’ and it can happen with Strathmore greener option paper.”

Solomon Chaison, a fourth-year student in graphic design, received an award under Print, Promotional, Brochure Design. “The client’s work inspired it,” he said. “Good imagery makes for better design.”

Chaison credits professor Peter Wong for teaching him basic design principles that “would guide and improve my creative juices.” As for how winning a SCADDY might influence his career Chaison said, “It shows I’m heading in the right direction as a graphic designer,” and then added, “the competition was stiff so I think being recognized for my work is the greatest experience and achievement as a graphic design student at SCAD.”

Lo believes that winning a SCADDY will set her on her way to produce other award-winning advertisements and notes that the highlight of the SCADDY experience was the road trip to Savannah with her classmates.

Other SCAD Atlanta winners included graphic design students Daniel Plasa and Renée Dunn (who is studying in Hong Kong this quarter), and graduate advertising student Neil Hieatt.
