The Connector

Attending Flux this year was quite the experience, and for the reasons one might not think. I missed the event

last year and was determined to go this year to get my own perspective. It wasn’t exactly how I expected it to be, however that is not to be mistaken as a bad thing. The whole event reminded me of going to an smaller art festival only with thousands more people. The art ranged from performance, political art, abstract digital media, semi-conventional gallery art and music maker coinciding with dancing lights, all of which explored the entire rainbow of human emotions.

Despite the spectacular, visually-stimulating, sometimes thought-provoking art, I found myself enjoying being at an art event with my friends, rather than enjoying the art itself. Mainly because the way are some of the art displays were set up, only a certain number of people could watch or explore at a time, the fact that there were thousands of people trying observe one or more large art pieces at one time; a serious a lack of a convenience factor. But most of all, some of the work was a bit too experimental and so out of the box that the box could not be seen anymore. This is not, however, a general overview of all the art that was seen; some of the artwork was incredible to witness and some I wanted to take home with me. I would not have enjoyed it as much if it wasn’t for the fact it was surrounded by my follow artisans who can understand or not understand everything we were seeing, hearing or experiencing.

Nevertheless, Flux is the place where even making your own live performance was more than accepting, if not encouraged where even complete strangers could join in. My entire experience  was magnanimously enjoyable in both being accompanied by good friends and experiencing art in entirely new ways. I recommended this event to anymore who is willing to brave enormous crowds for the sake of art and open their mind to what Flux has to offer and has a solid group of friends you are willing to dance in the middle of the street with. If nothing else, go for the $3 cocktails and $4 beers.
