Every quarter, Career and Alumni Success organizes information sessions, networking events and interview opportunities for SCAD students. Their winter calendar kicked off earlier last week when Scripps Network Interactive came to speak with students about their open positions in the summer Interior Design Co-Op Internship for the HGTV arm of their company. In addition to HGTV, Scripps is also home to DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel and Great American Country.

Melissa Sykes, Vice President of Content Diversity for HGTV, said, “There are some wonderfully talented students in Atlanta. We want to give students a 360 degree view of the business.”

Through the Interior Design Co-Op Internship, interior design students have the opportunity to work in editorial, research and ratings, product imagination, marketing and promotion, licensing and business communication over the course of their ten week term. Interns work at company headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. and travel on location to help with the filming of an HGTV original series. They also have the opportunity to be mentored by one of HGTV’s on-air talents.

After Sykes finished, Felicia Feaster, Editor-in-Chief of HGTVGardens.com, and Anne Wilkerson, Production Manager for Scripps, spoke about other opportunities for students outside of the interior design department. Heather Lasich, fourth-year visual effects student, said, “I think the presentation was better than expected. I was really happy that they presented to multiple majors instead of focusing on one. Each of the presenters was very knowledgeable and presented the information in a way that everyone could understand.” In addition to interior design students, the talk brought students from motion media, photography, luxury fashion management and writing.

Ali Harrell, Career and Alumni Success Advisor, noted that more students need to take advantage of these opportunities. “I think we could definitely have better attendance at most of our employer presentations,” she said. “It’s important for current students to remember three things: One, this is one of the only times in a person’s life when employers actively seek them out, so it’s essential to take advantage of every opportunity. Two, even if you’re not looking for an internship/job at the moment it’s a good idea to attend the presentations to meet and network with the recruiters so when the time comes and you are actively looking you already have a network of industry professionals to reach out to. Three, keep your options open!  Just because a company isn’t your ‘dream’ company doesn’t mean that they don’t have great opportunities. The presentations are a good chance to find out more and ask questions.”
