As an avid shopper of beauty giant Sephora, I have experienced firsthand the difficulty of finding my correct shade in a sea of luxury makeup. As someone with a self-proclaimed caramel skin tone, I find that even though drugstore makeup brands, such as Covergirl, carry makeup in my shade and darker, numerous luxury brands will carry shades that stop at about my skin tone or lighter. It calls into question whether makeup brands realize that people of color use luxury cosmetics and that they should be included in the array of shades available.

This September Sephora welcomed blackUp Cosmetics to their brand roster, a French luxury cosmetic company that creates prestige makeup for people of color. The brand differentiates by creating blushes and lip colors that stand out on darker skin or foundation, powders and concealers that match the warmer undertones found in richly pigmented skin. They even carry the perfect nude lipstick or nail polish for one’s skin, which after the Nubian Skin campaign, the world realized nude was hard to find for people of color.

In short, with the concept of beauty becoming a more overarching concept, blackUp Cosmetics is another company that is adding to that concept by revolutionizing the industry of beauty and making it more approachable for people of color to exist in those spaces.
If you want to check out blackUp Cosmetics, their products are currently available online and in stores at your local Sephora.
