Students can enter their work into the 9th Annual Artists’ Book Symposium and Competition until Friday, May 6 at 5 p.m. The book symposium will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 2-5 p.m.

An artist book is art that utilizes, challenges, defies, references, or embraces the book as a mode of artistic expression. For example, it can be sculptural, political, sewn, conceptual or literal.

In the 250 word artist statement, which is required with each entry, the student needs to make an argument that proves their entry is a book for it to be eligible to compete. There are no set categories of books to be entered as of now because the judges will wait until all entries have been received before setting categories.

Collaborative works are encouraged in this competition.  However, entries should not include food, hazardous materials. Any type of outside resources such as A/V equipment or computers are also prohibited.

The schedule on May 12 will kick off with Breaking the Stereotype Workshop from 11a.m.- 1p.m. in the ACA Library, Room 413. Attendees will learn about creating lively characters for their work. The students will also create a zine during this workshop in a collaborative effort. To reserve a spot students must register by emailing ameeks@scad.edu.

The awards for the Student Artists’ Book Competition will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Trois Gallery in the ACA library.

The event will be moderated by Carolyn Carr. Presentations will be given by: Robin Bernat of {Poem 88}, William Boling of Fall Line Press, Amanda Mills of Murmur: Atlanta Zine Library and Atlanta Zine Fest, and Ashley Schick SCAD Printmaking Alumna and Instructor.

The symposium is free and open to the public.
