Students talk about their hopes and expectations for SCAD’s scholarships
Applications are still being accepted for scholarships for current students until Thursday, April 30, and students have expressed their hopes and expectations for the scholarships.
Many students said they supported SCAD’s offer of more scholarships. A common misunderstanding around campus, however, is that scholarships only apply to second- and third-year students. Even though most scholarships require at least 45 credit hours, there are a few that are available to first-year and transfer students.
Alana Adams, a first-year fashion marketing and management student, said she planned to apply for one.
“In my case, my parents support me,” Adams said, “but I think they would be happy if I got it.”
Porscha Hill, a second-year fashion design student, also said she plans to apply for scholarships this time around. She said she has been working hard to get As and Bs to increase her chances.
Jennifer Sutherland, a first-year illustration student who said she received an academic merit scholarship upon her acceptance to SCAD, can vouch for the helpfulness of the funding.
“I have a scholarship with the school already, and I greatly appreciate the school having giving me one.”
Like Sutherland, Chelsea Smith, a second-year painting student, also received an academic scholarship, but said she’s looking forward to applying for others.
“I can’t imagine myself attending SCAD without scholarships,” Smith said. “I wouldn’t be able to.” She said she found the application process easy because all it requires is a bit of time to fill in a short autobiographical essay.
Shelley Dubois, a first-year fashion design student, said she appreciates SCAD’s attempt to provide students with more scholarships.
“Of course, there should be more, but this is a good amount already,” Dubois said.
Many students in need hope that this year’s Scholarship Gala helps increase the amount of scholarships offered next year.
Janelle Ashton, a first-year fashion marketing and management student, said she was not aware of SCAD’s institutional scholarships. After finding out about them, though, she said she decided to check them out.
For those who haven’t applied, there is still time. To find the list of scholarships, go to MySCAD, click on the “Student Workspace” tab in MySCAD, then go to the “Student Toolkit” section, and click on “Scholarships for Current Students.”
