Artist identity: Seven students tell what inspired them to become artists
As a young child, I knew that I had a knack for interior design. At the age of 4, I had to approve everything that was going into my newly decorated room, and my interest for design continued to grow from that point on. A few years later, I saw a runaway model on TV for the first time. I was fascinated by what I saw, and I quickly developed a love for fashion, as well. Even though I love math and science and other more technical subjects, I know that I couldn’t live without creating. That is why I ended up at an art school like SCAD.

When I was a kid, I used to love watching Looney Tunes and other cartoons. I wanted to grow up and make cartoons, just like the ones I watched, to simply make kids laugh like how I used to. When I was older, in middle school, I went to a museum and was introduced to the Renaissance paintings and loved the intensity in the works and [it] made me want to further pursue art as a career. In high school, I already had made up my mind to be an artist, but after learning more in-depth knowledge on animation and film, I wanted to become a production illustrator and produce the pre-production art that sets the tone for film, thus influencing my decision to become an illustration major at SCAD.

I never, and still haven’t “decided” that I wanted to be an artist. I have always enjoyed drawing, painting and making things with my hands. My mom, a part-time art teacher, has always encouraged me. It was not until high school that I wanted to take it further. My high school art teacher, David Veater, is who really inspired and pushed me.

Art is something that I grew up with. We lived in the mountains of north Georgia and my mother enjoyed painting mountainscapes in her free time. Her talent was passed on to my oldest sister, who I am very close to. She has a big imagination and is so creative. She draws fantasy characters, such as dwarfs and nymphs and fairies. I always looked up to her and she practically raised me. But I never thought I would ever do art until I moved to Savannah. There, I attended Savannah Arts Academy for high school, where I became very passionate about painting, drawing and digital media. I went on to become a finalist in the Georgia Governor’s Honors program in the area of art and later a student at SCAD.

I was mainly inspired to become a photographer by growing up reading National Geographic. I loved looking at all the pictures and thought it would be cool to be a photojournalist.

I am not an artist by birth, but I am an artist by nature. My mother while cooking, father while performing on stage, grandmother while sewing, they put their heart into it. Even cooking and sewing is an art. One can be very artistic doing small things like these. Every creative creature on Earth inspires me to be an artist.

Apart from legends such as David Ogilvy and Leo Burnett, I came to know about Indian legends such as Alyque Padamsee, Piyush Pandey and Prasoon Joshi, who single-handedly changed the Indian advertisment industry. And thus a great deal changed for me when I started my Bachelor of Fine Arts program. To me, advertising is a medium of expression, which can go beyond any imagination to craft new ideas and reach out to the audience. It has no boundaries, which stimulates my creative personality to become an art director.
I believe a creative person in advertising has to be jack of all other trades and master of [none]. Since childhood, my textbooks and notebooks were always filled with caricatures, storyboards of fictitious heroes. I also had a good score in school-level drawing competitions. So, a very senior artist in my family suggested me to enroll for the Bachelor of Fine Arts program to apply my creativity in the right direction. The practical application of the program was stimulating, and from still life, poster designing, book jackets initially, then to ad campaigns, I enjoyed doing what I did. In about two years, I had won two awards in the college-level exhibition, and since then, I have been focused at pursuing my graduate studies with a concentration in art direction.
