Scratching your head about the large marble block sitting on SCAD’s front lawn?
Not to fear. The lonely slab will soon get an aesthetic boost when it becomes the permanent home of a 14-foot-tall sculpture created by renowned sculptor Jedd Novatt.
According to a university news release, art collector Mary Spencer donated the sculpture to SCAD in memory of her husband Sash Spencer.
The sculpture, “Chaos Mundaka,” is scheduled to arrive at SCAD on Oct. 8, after its journey from Spain.
“The Novatt sculpture will serve as a source of inspiration to our students and will enhance the cultural and artistic diversity of Atlanta,” Barry M. Buxton, SCAD’s vice president for special projects, said the news release.
The sculpture isn’t the only new arrival. SCAD Atlanta recently named Brad Iftner the athletic director and tennis coach in anticipation of the intercollegiate athletics program coming fall 2010.

SCAD’s interior design B.F.A program received its accreditation from the Council of Interior Design Accreditation, the university announced in a news release. The accreditation affirms that SCAD meets CIDA standards and ensures that students are well equipped for professional practice, the release said.
The School of Design has added two majors: design for sustainability (M.A.) and service design (B.F.A. and M.F.A). SCAD will announce the new majors at the Industrial Designers Society of America’s national conference Sept. 23-26 in Miami.
Continuing in the name of growth, SCAD launched the Digital Media Center. The building, formerly home to Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA, will now house SCAD’s film and digital media majors. Part of the DMC is now open to students, but the grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 7.
The opening of the DMC prompted a shuttle service expansion to include a stop at the new building and Ivy Hall.
Ivy Hall is SCAD’s cultural arts and writing center, which also hosts visiting authors as part of the Ivy Hall Writers Series.
The university recently released the upcoming series schedule, set to feature acclaimed authors Ray C. Anderson, Margaret Atwood, Augusten Burroughs, Joel Cohen and Colson Whitehead.
