Events galore: This week in arts and entertainment
Bored? Need a break? Whatever your reason, we have your remedy to break that dreaded monotonous trap that students often fall into. Whether you want to get away or stay in town, there is plenty to do. And some events will not even cost you a penny. Here is your day-to-day breakdown of all things arts and entertainment.
Now through April 2
“Through the Woods”
“Through the Woods” is a solo exhibition by California-based artist Clare Rojas, showcasing her distinct iconography that references imagery ranging from Dutch Hex signs to Russian nesting dolls and American comic books. Rojas connects themes of history, community, feminism, ecology and individuality through the folklore depicted in her paintings. Rojas’ exhibition is on display in the ACA Gallery of SCAD Atlanta, located inside the Woodruff Arts Center. A special performance by Rojas’ alter ego, Peggy Honeywell, will take place Thursday, April 1 at 6 p.m.

Looking for a fun way to expand your cultural horizons? Get a taste of “la dolce vita” at the 4th annual Italian Film Festival, screening at Georgia State University’s Rialto Theater for the Arts. Festival events include the seven showcased feature films, short film presentations and documentaries, concluding with a closing cocktail reception at the Glenn Hotel on April 3. All screenings are free and open to the public, though the closing cocktail event will be limited to 120 guests, so get there early!
Lecture: Luke Sullivan
Interested in a career in advertising? Come hear Luke Sullivan’s journey from Tom McElligott’s understudy at The Martin Agency in Richmond, Virginia to Managing Group Creative Head at GSD&M in Austin, Texas. Sullivan has also authored a book on advertising titled, “Hey Whipple, Squeeze This: A Guide to Creating Great Advertising,” now in its third edition. The lecture will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the DMC Theater. Students are requested to be seated by 9:15 a.m.
Lecture: Chief Justice Leah Ward Sear’s Distinguished Lecture on Legal Issues in the Arts
Named in honor of former Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, the first African-American female chief justice in the United States and the first woman and youngest person to sit on the Supreme Court of Georgia. This lecture explores legal issues that affect artists and their art. Topics include copyright and trademark infringement, intellectual property issues, First Amendment rights and the Visual Artists Rights Act. Sears will be joined by a panel of attorneys from Atlanta law firm Schiff Hardin. A reception will follow.
First Thursdays Buckhead Gallery Walk
Check out Atlanta artists practicing their craft at First Thursdays Buckhead Gallery Walk, from 7 to 10 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month from March through October. This month’s participating galleries include Alan Avery Art Company, Anne Irwin Fine Art, Atlanta Artists Center, Catherine Kelleghan Gallery, Copeland Collection Gallery, David Gallery/Painting Exchange, DE Fine Art Gallery, Hagehorn Foundation Gallery, Huff Harrington Fine Art, Lagerquist Gallery, The Sportsman’s Gallery, TULA Art Center and Twenty 21 Collection/Gallery Rodin. Refreshments will be served in each gallery.
Saturday, April 3
International Festival in Savannah
Daytrip to Savannah to experience the 12th Annual International Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Broughton Street between Lincoln and Abercorn streets. This event is free and open to the public and buses will be available to travel from the Atlanta campus. Features of the festival include traditional music, dance, art and food to celebrate the diversity of SCAD’s international arts community.
Wednesday, April 7
The Artist Speaks (Poetry & Painting)
We know you love art, but do you like poetry? What about music? Combine all of these art forms in SCAD Atlanta’s spoken word café, titled, The Artist Speaks. Here, poets and artists create art based on expression and interpretation of words and mood. This event will be held in the Spring House TV room from 7 to 9 p.m.
Friday, April 9
Look for internship and job opportunities at the SCAD Career Fair, held at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center, April 9 at 11 a.m. Seniors, alumni and graduate students will have preference between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Savannah Belle Ferry as well as SCAD buses will be available to transport job hunters to the Convention Center. Buses will be available to travel from the Atlanta campus. For more information about the SCAD Career Fair, e-mail the office of career services.
Come support your fellow students at SCAD’s first ever animation film festival, titled, AtlantAmation, at the historic Earl Strand Theater in Marietta on April 9 at 7 p.m. The festival showcases animated short films by some of SCAD Atlanta’s most talented student animators. Independently animated films and group projects from the undergraduate and graduate animation programs will be screened as well. The festival will also premiere the student and faculty collaborative piece, “Jaguar McGuire.” Tickets are available at the door and online: $8 for the general public, $5 for students and $2 for SCAD students with a valid ID.
