Designer Juan Carlos Obando once again pleased audiences for Fashion Week. During this year’s Spring/Summer fashion shows, held in New York City’s Milk Studios, he presented a stunning futuristic female fantasy. For years, the designer has been executing sophisticated garments with thorough inspirations ⎯ from New York City to outer space, fantasy to fashion figures, as well as the pure inspiration of fashion itself. Obando is known for having a heavy hand in his work; he has previously hand-sewn entire collections. Audiences have watched his line develop season after season: from simple yet heavily constructed gowns to strong detailed pleating, his introduction to pants, structured and tailored fits, to his latest washing, dyeing and cutout techniques. This year’s show was nothing short of ground breaking. As the sounds of new world exploration filled the room, the show began. Obando presented looks that were of unique color palettes, resembling dawn and dusk during an exploration of new planets. His garments exhibited hand crafted texture and detailed finishes. Viewers also saw a well-crafted skill of strategic cutouts.
SCAD Dean of Fashion Michael Fink and owner of Los Angeles boutique Decades Cameron Silver were applauding in the audience. I would like to thank SCAD for the opportunity to attend and assist with the production of this show. Obando is sure to continue successfully in his field as he further develops his brand and as he creates consistent recognizable fashions.
