A few things that makes SCAD Atlanta so unique are the high-tech, beautiful facilities, designed to accommodate students’ academic and creative needs. These physical resources range from decked-out computer labs on nearly every floor to photography studios and single-person darkrooms. Since SCAD students often use the Adobe Suite applications for courses like Survey of Computer Arts Application and Design II, these computer labs receive regular use.
SCAD strives to provide students with high-quality equipment, but there are always going to be problems that crop up as result of round-the-clock usage. Recently, students found that some of the mice for the Mac desktops in the third floor lab were performing erratically. Once reported, the faulty mice were quickly replaced, according to Vice President P.J. Johnson.
“We are happy to report the malfunctioning computer mice were quickly replaced. In addition, our technology team performed a thorough inspection of each computer located in the third floor homework lab and found no further technical issues,” said Johnson.
Writing students, who spend most of their time at Ivy Hall, may have noticed the discomfort of the brown, wooden chairs located on the first floor of the building. The antique chairs are creaky and can cause a sore bum after a two-and-one-half-hour lecture. Even though the chairs are not exactly comfortable, some of the furniture was generously donated to Ivy Hall to maintain the historical feel of the house. “We strive to make it safe, comfortable and compatible with the house’s history and purpose,” said Johnson.
In all, SCAD provides students with high-quality equipment to produce high-quality work. In the main building, the equipment is available for students to use all hours of the day. SCAD also works hard to help students learn how to operate the equipment, by way of tutorials, learning programs like Lynda.com and instructional handouts for the printers.
Any concerns students might have pertaining to the computers can be answered by the Technology Support Center at itsupport@scad.edu. All other facilities concerns can be directed to campus liaison Kate Firebaugh, who is in charge of physical resources, at kfirebau@scad.edu.
Correction, May 4: The original version of this article misstated that the mice in the Mac lab were repaired within a couple of weeks. The quote actually stated that they were repaired quickly.
