Apple Incorporated and its products are basically impossible to avoid. Apple has been around since 1976, but it has never been as popular as it is today.
The company that started out as purveyors of notebook and desktop computers, has transformed into a major player in the phone and music industries as well. The introduction of the extremely popular iPod in 2001 (selling nearly 300 million as of Dec. 2010) solidified Apple’s status as a technological giant.
SCAD Atlanta is filled with trendy and tech-savvy students toting glossy notebooks, iPhones and iPods. But it is no secret that Apple products are on the pricey side. An iMac desktop can cost between $1,200 and $2,000, with notebooks ranging from $1,200 to $2,499 and more with customization. Some people argue that Mac shoppers are overpaying for what is essentially pure aesthetic.
“Apple products are counterintuitive. They’re focused merely on aesthetic. Fashion over function,” said Hank Silman, second-year interactive design and game development student.
The high price tag for most of their products may be a turn-off for consumers like Silman, but there are many students who are willing to shell out the cash for a piece of Apple. “I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. I think the quality is superior to other products on the market,” said Chris Bagwell, second-year interior design student.
Users explain that there are several aspects that contribute to the allure of Apple products. The aesthetic is clean and bright, making the interface easy to navigate. In addition, the organization of tools and options is very user-friendly. “The interface looks amazing, which makes it fun and easy to use,” said Bagwell.
The brand is also popular in creative industries, and some students purchase Mac computers for that reason. “Because of the field that I’m in, it’s necessary for me to own my MacBook Pro,” said Josh Same, second-year motion media design student. “I enjoy their products. I feel as if I’ve invested in something that I can make wonderful, if I put effort into it with accessories and various programs.”
As with most pricey purchases, members of the Apple community proudly display the insignia. It is no secret that there are some who peg Apple buyers as elitists for spending more than PC owners. “I think for the most part they do [feel elitist]. Apple is known for carrying top-of-the-line technology, so that alone, in my opinion, is the reason for most people’s decision to invest in their products,” said Bagwell.
The decision to buy one of Apple’s more expensive products really comes down to budget and preference. It can also come down to trying to fit into a particular image, one where our electronic products don’t just work well — they make us look good, too.
