Since its opening in 2005, SCAD Atlanta has had two student talent shows. One in 2008 and another in 2009. This past year, however, the student show case was missing.
“We didn’t host a talent show for a few reasons, mostly due to the hectic winter quarter schedule due to makeup classes, etc. Also, we want to revamp the show and look at ways to improve it,” said Marcus Mister, director of Student Life at SCAD Atlanta.
In the past, talent shows have been hosted in the Hub and gave out prizes, like $400 to the SCAD bookstore, for first place winners.
Since SCAD students are either artists or art appreciators, alternative creative outlets are a necessity. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that many students have an affinity for creative expression outside of their disciplines. Students like Daniel Jones, second-year interactive game design and development student, play instruments. Playing the saxophone has been an important part of Jones’ life for the past nine years. “The only thing I could equate making music to is sex. It has a flow and a rhythm. A passionate flow,” he said.
SCAD Atlanta students also express themselves through dance. First-year interactive game design and development student Olsen Carbel said she would be interested in performing a hip-hop dance routine.
Even if the talent show makes a comeback, will busy students actually attend? “A lot of SCAD students have sizable school loads to carry through the week. It would be hard for me to attend a talent show, but having it on a weekend would make me more able to attend,” said Tyler Baird, fourth-year illustration student.
Attending the talent show might be easier for students who live near the SCAD main building. For students who commute, driving to school for social events is not always an option. “I’m probably not going to come anyway. I live an hour-and-a-half away. However, if it was broadcast online, I would probably watch it at my house. It would be interesting to see what students like to do,” said Michelle Ionescu, second-year animation student.
The past talent shows at SCAD Atlanta have been hosted at Spring House and were on the smaller side. With plans for a makeover of the next talent show, scheduled to take place sometime next year, Mister hopes to improve audience turnout and participation, and make the show into a major event.
