Walking through the streets of Sham Shui Po:
1. “Octopus Balls”
Initially I was interested in trying one because they smell like sweet doughnuts or beignets. However, I quickly changed my mind when the vendor said, “It’s octopus inside. That ok?”
2. “Shiny Meat in the Window”
This is a common sight throughout Hong Kong. Smoked ducks, chickens and pigs are often displayed in restaurant windows hanging from meat hooks. It is considered bad luck to sever a duck’s head from the body. This is also a customary gift for newlywed couples.
3. “? on a Stick”
I believe this is a part of a chicken, but it could be a pig — I’m still learning Cantonese.
