For those who pursue a vegan lifestyle the options of fine dining may limit where to hang out on the weekend or catch a quick bite for lunch. Luckily, Cafe Sunflower is an eatery that could please vegetarians and meat-eaters alike and it is located near campus. Cafe Sunflower has a simple decor and a calm atmosphere that lends itself to quiet visits with friends.

Appetizers like steamed or pan fried dumplings that include Asian cabbage, carrots, tofu, black mushrooms with soy-ginger sauce starts at $8. Something simpler to prepare the vegan palate are the Jamaican limbo plantains served with chipotle black bean dip, also $8. Prices for entrees average at $12 and options like the caprese sandwich with basil-marinated mozzarella, eggplant and extra virgin olive oil on ciabatta bread create inventive dishes. Sides of broccoli fries and caper cream are available with the sandwich entrees. A more savory option would be the orzo eggplant lasagna with layers of baked portabella mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, oven roasted red peppers, tofu ricotta and roasted shallot marinara. That’s also $12 and is served with organic greens, kalamata olives and artichoke hearts with balsamic vinaigrette.

To complete the meatless meal, vegan desserts like the old-fashioned chocolate cake and the chocolate raspberry mousse cake, among other options, are $6.75.
