Atlanta weekend showcase 5/3 – 5/5
Saturday May 4, 2013
The Masquerade Heaven
The Black Angels | $20 | 10 p. m. | All ages
The Black Angels have been pumping out hippie tunes since early 2008 and haven’t looked back since. It would only make sense that their sound is reminiscent of Velvet Underground, their name comes from VU’s “The Black Angel’s Death Song.” But their range isn’t limited to trippy grooves, they’ll jam out like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and sometimes they even have that powerful Manchester Orchestra stillness. Their latest album “Phosphene Dream” has heralded positive reviews from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. So throw on that paisley and run, don’t walk, to the Masquerade. If you miss them here in Atlanta, they’ll be at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville on Sunday May 5.
Sunday May 5, 2013
The Loft
The Hush Sound | $16 | 7 p. m. | All ages
The Hush Sound’s leading lady Greta Salpeter’s angelic voice accompanies classical piano melodies and, surprisingly rocking guitar licks from Bob Morris. They’re odd and weirdly classical, banging and quiet. If you like The Academy Is or Empires, then you’re going to love The Hush Sound.
