Broadway season begins at Fox, bringing hit ‘The Book of Mormon’
Starting in November, Broadway in Atlanta brings their latest season of mega-hit plays to the Fox Theatre. The 2013-2014 season is already selling out shows with an exciting line-up of Atlanta premieres. “What is special about this season in particular is the premiere engagement of ‘The Book Of Mormon’ in Atlanta,” said Russ Belin, Vice President of Broadway in Atlanta. “Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ will also play the Fox Theatre for the first time.”
For newcomers to the city, catching a show at the Fox Theatre is an Atlanta tradition. The theater itself is a jaw-dropping architectural combination of Islamic and Egyptian design, with a Arabian-themed auditorium where a Bedouin canopy flanks the stage and a hundred twinkling stars flicker from the ceiling. When the big Broadway hits roll into town with their massive sets and top-notch singers, every one of the 4,678 seats is taken. Belin said, “Students can expect to see the very best performers, set designers, musicians in the industry; it’s the magic of Broadway without traveling to New York City.”
For college students looking for a more affordable ticket, Broadway in Atlanta offers a student rush program year-round for select engagements. SCAD students have access to $25 tickets for select performances with a valid student ID*. The $25 tickets are available for purchase up to two hours prior to the performance. Find out more by showing your ID before purchasing at the Fox Theatre box office. To stay up-to-date on ticket offers and general Broadway news, Belin recommends liking Broadway in Atlanta’s Facebook page for the latest news.
You’re going to want to catch at least one of the shows taking the stage in the next year. From edgy rock shows to classic romances, the 2013-2014 season has something for everyone:
“Ghost The Musical” / Nov 5-10
Amazing illusions and effects go along with an original pop score from multiple Grammy Award-winners Dave Stewart, one half of the 80s pop duo the Eurythmics, and Glen Ballard, co-writer with Alanis Morissette on the multi-platinum album “Jagged Little Pill.” Based on the 1990 film starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, this classic love story is a crowd pleaser.
“The Book Of Mormon” / Jan 28-Feb 9
“The Book of Mormon” hails from the creators of “South Park” and follows two young Mormon missionaries to a remote village in Northern Uganda. Ben Brantley of “The New York Times” calls it “the best musical of this century,” while “Entertainment Weekly” goes one step further by saying it’s “the funniest musical of all time.” Garnering nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, the “Book of Mormon” will have its Atlanta premiere at the Fox Theatre.
“Once” / March 4-9
“Once” is an eight-time Tony Award winner including the award for Best Musical, and also a Grammy winner this year for Best Musical Theater Album. Based on the 2007 film of the same name, the story follows a Dublin street musician who meets a young woman who shows interest in his haunting songs. It features the Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly” by the Swell Season.
“The Lion King” / April 10-27
With stunning costumes, amazing choreography and memorable songs, Disney’s “The Lion King” has been seen by millions of people worldwide. Insiders agree: you won’t want to arrive late since one of the coolest parts of “The Lion King” happens in the first five minutes.
“American Idiot” / May 1-4
“American Idiot” is an energy-fueled rock opera that doesn’t feature much dialogue but instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line. It’s got an edgier feel than the other shows in the line-up, and it will be a hit with fans of Green Day’s music.
“Evita” / June 3-8
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical is a classic Broadway hit following the lifetime of Argentine political leader Eva Peron. In 1996 it would later go on to become a movie starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. This stunning new production is directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Tony winner Rob Ashford.
