The Weekly Dead: The emotional roller coaster begins
By Dana J. Hortman, contributor
On episode three of “The Walking Dead”, tensions escalate in the aftermath of Tyreese’s gruesome discovery of Karen and David’s charred bodies. While Rick tries to solve the murder mystery within the prison confines, the infectious virus that is rapidly spreading continues to baffle Hershel and Dr. S.
Spoiler Alert:
Reminded of his own personal hardships, Rick attempts to sympathize with Tyreese’s loss, and even vows for the murderer to be avenged. However, we’re reminded Rick still isn’t in control of his violence when he and Tyreese start throwing punches in a grief-stricken brawl.
Meanwhile, the contagious virus continues to afflict the prison, and contaminates those who survived the cellblock D attack, including Sasha, Dr. S, Lizzie and Glenn. The prison committee decides to isolate the sick until a cure is established. In an effort to save the infected, Hershel suggests a group travel to the veterinary school at West Peachtree Tech to search for antibiotics. As Daryl, Michonne, Bob and Tyreese venture to the college, their journey is interrupted by a stagnant radio signal. Whose voice is being transmitted on the radio? Are there survivors in the vicinity? Distracted by the sound, the group overlooks the horde of walkers ahead, who quickly ambush the Dodge Charger. Back at the prison, Rick realizes an even bigger dilemma (and shocking secret)—Carol burned the bodies.
My Three Obsessions:
1. Daryl called baby Judith by her first name, “Little A** Kicker,” in a much-needed comic throwback to season three. And for the record, I think his obsession with L.A.K. means he’s ready to procreate with Carol.
2. The Stetson is back. In season two, Rick gave his sheriff’s hat and badge to Carl after he woke from surgery following a gunshot wound—a hat that symbolizes bravery, strength and perhaps power. Ever since that iconic moment between father and son, Carl has sported the infamous Stetson until the current season when he decided it wasn’t suitable to wear while farming. However, Rick’s dream of a thriving farm is shattered due to the spreading virus, thus the return of little sheriff Carl and his favorite hat.
3. Forget Michelle Obama—all I want for Christmas is Michonne’s toned biceps and triceps.
Did You Know?
When Michonne is flipping through Zack’s CD collection, the featured CD is by Atlanta-based late 90s rock band, Synchro Nine Factor. Lead vocalist and lyricist Nelson Hagood has served as On Set Dresser for the first three seasons of “The Walking Dead.” Graduating from The Art Institute of Atlanta, Hagood earned a degree in visual communications/computer graphics.
