April 14 marked the headlining event of SCADstyle 2014 for the Atlanta campus. Prabal Gurung, winner of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and runner up for the 2010 Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue Fashion Fund, came to SCAD Atlanta for a small Q&A led by Steven Kolb, the CEO of the CFDA. The interview was then followed by a Q&A with members from the audience.
During the interview, Gurung spoke about how he believed fully in the American dream, after coming to the United States from Nepal. He is also a big believer in the CFDA, the organization that helped him launch his start merely a few years ago. He talked about how the confidence his mother possessed helped him see the power of style and that his main inspiration is the women that he designs for. One of the few mantras he mentioned was making women feel beautiful, as well as creating a brand that was “luxury with soul.”
Overall, Prabal Gurung was an engaging speaker, and the audience was actively engaged. He focused on how enthralled he was to be able to make a living out of what he does and how that was enough for him. In the end, “passion, talent, grit, determination and humility,” another one of Gurung’s mantras, will be what helps us all aspiring in the industry to achieve our goals.
