SCAD Atlanta teams for AIDS and Alzheimer’s benefits

AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run raises funds to help people living with HIV/AIDS in Metropolitan Atlanta, and helps prevent HIV infection through the programs and services of AID Atlanta and four other participating organizations. These exceptional AIDS service organizations provide treatment, medication, prevention education, meals, housing, mental health services, child care, substance abuse counseling, pastoral care, and research. Please join our team of walkers and runners, raise funds, and come to Piedmont Park on Sunday, Oct. 18 to keep these services funded for our friends, family, and neighbors. For more information or to join the SCAD Atlanta Team, visit the SCAD Atlanta team page.

Join our team for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Together, we can advance research to treat and prevent Alzheimer’s, and provide programs and support to improve the lives of millions of affected Americans. The Atlanta walk is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26. For more information, visit the SCAD Atlanta team page.

Tameka Norris exhibition: ‘Between Bloodlines and Floodlines’

SCAD presents “Between Bloodlines and Floodlines,” an exhibition by artist Tameka Norris. Norris’s multidisciplinary practice explores issues of race, poverty and social politics, drawing on her own experiences and relationships as an underlying narrative. Through painting, performance, music and film, Norris explores her identity as an artist with roots in the deep American South. This exhibition is in Gallery 1600 through Friday, Oct. 2. A reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 6-7 p.m.

Be a buddy to a new international student

Volunteers are needed to help new international students make the transition to Atlanta and SCAD. The ISSO is seeking student, faculty and staff “buddies” to help students in the Cultural and Academic Preparation Program that starts Thursday, July 30. Each buddy will be paired with a CAPP participant and serve as an informal resource and supportive friend throughout the four-week program. Some activities for buddies and CAPP participants could include:

• Going out to eat
• Joining your CAPP student for two complimentary meals at The Hub
• Touring Atlanta
• Introducing them to others
• Accompanying them on errands such as opening a bank account or purchasing a cellphone
• Sharing cultural experiences
• Cooking a meal

Current SCAD students, faculty and staff are welcome to apply to be a CAPP buddy by emailing Peter May.
