After months of secretive renovations, this weekend was the inauguration of the first fashion museum in the south: SCAD FASH. The museum, highlighting domestic and international fashion, is one of many new additions SCAD Atlanta set to bring in outside attention and establish SCAD’s brand. On opening day almost 2,000 people visited SCAD FASH.The first exhibition was a curated show of 84 Oscar de la Renta gowns worn by celebrities and dignitaries such as Beyonce, Taylor Swift and former First Lady Laura Bush; it’s no wonder students and guests are buzzing. The Oscar de la Renta exhibition will continue through the end of the year. The museum features a screening room for fashion films and lectures, in addition to their public gallery space.
After walking in with the first few crowds of people and taking a look around, I asked a few of the students what they thought about the museum and the exhibition. Fashion major Michael Badger said that he liked how the exhibit allowed him to see the up-close details on the gowns. I also caught up with fashion marketing and management major Taneisha James who said, “It’s interesting to see the consistency of the Oscar de la Renta brand and how Peter Copping, the new creative director, has taken it on.” She went on to comment about how designing high fashion seemed more approachable for her after seeing an American designer known for couture and high fashion instead of someone international.
SCAD FASH will offer memberships and daily admission free for current students, staff and faculty. SCAD alumni and students from other colleges will pay a discounted rate of $5 and general admission will be $10. For more information check out the SCAD FASH website.
