From all black to pretty in pink, celebs are using fashion to show support for women this awards season

The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards has come and gone but the impact of its epic fashion statement remains. With the Golden Globes’ all-black uniform still on our minds, many wondered if the trend would continue as awards season kicks into full gear. We couldn’t help but notice shades of pink flooding the red carpet at the SAG Awards this past Sunday, just one day after the Women’s March. The color was a stark contrast to the coordinated blackout seen a few weeks earlier at the Golden Globes, but sent a powerful message of its own hinting that this year is the year of the woman.
Earlier this month, women of Hollywood joined together to announce the Times Up initiative, a coalition and legal defense fund that targets sexual harassment and power unbalance in the workplace. To show support for the cause, celebrities chose to wear black in solidarity, creating an epic fashion statement and proving fashion can send a powerful message.
Golden Globe winner and most recent recipient of SCAD’s Étoile award, Reese Witherspoon, was one of the original signers of the Time’s Up Letter of Solidarity. Witherspoon chose an elegant, one-shoulder custom gown by Zac Posen and used her acceptance speech as a platform to champion the cause.
“I want to thank everyone who broke their silence this year and spoke up about abuse and harassment,” Witherspoon stated as she accepted the Golden Globe on behalf of “Big Little Lies,” her TV series. “So people out there who are feeling silenced by harassment, discrimination, abuse: time is up. We see you, we hear you, and we will tell your stories.”
Some of our other favorite looks from the evening included Margot Robbie’s statement-shoulder Gucci dress with crystal embellishments, Kendall Jenner’s haute couture, voluminous strapless gown by Giambattista Valli, Millie Bobby Brown’s youthful mini dress with pockets by Calvin Klein, and Issa Rae’s sultry yet stately Prabal Gurung liquid chiffon gown featuring ruffled shoulders and a dramatic train.
Gurung shared a quote post-show from Rae on his Instagram account summing up the style of the evening and giving a premonition of what’s to come. “It’s more than just a color. It’s more than just wearing black,” Rae said. “We’re about that action.”
Which is why it is no surprise that the parade of pink gowns at the SAG Awards on Sunday created an undeniable feeling of a women’s movement. It seems hardly a coincidence that the hue so often associated with femininity flooded the red carpet in shades ranging from petal pink to vibrant fuchsia.
Some of our favorite looks from the SAG Awards prove that pink can be both pretty and powerful. Margot Robbie made our list again by stunning in a pearl-encrusted Miu Miu gown adorned with feathers. Madeline Brewer dazzled in a flirty yet demure tea-length blush Reem Acra dress with pearls. Alison Sudol romanced in a dreamy soft pleated Miu Miu design. Other attendees in pink included Samara Weaving, Millie Bobby Brown, Kate Hudson, Kristen Bell, Keltie Knight, Saoirse Ronan, Connie Britton and Laura Linney.
On the heels of the #WhyWeWearBlack movement and the nationwide Women’s March last Saturday, the pink trend echoed the women-power sentiment. Nominee Holly Hunter told E!’s Rancic that “this is the year of the woman.” We couldn’t agree more.
