Students, faculty and alumni turn out for lecture from designer Henry Kim
AIGA Atlanta and the Museum of Design Atlanta (MoDA) hosted graphic designer Henry Kim for a lecture and book signing event Jan 25. at SCADshow.
Kim’s new book, “Graphic Design Discourse: Evolving Theories, Ideologies and Processes of Visual Communication,” is a collection of more than 75 texts, carefully curated to bridge the disciplines of art, architecture, design history and philosophy. The anthology is a guide and valuable resource for students of visual communication, as it helps to broaden their perspectives on design. The book was published by Princeton University Press in December 2017.
After a brief session to autograph copies of his book and posters, Kim gave a lecture on the process of compiling and designing the new book and spoke about the many influences he has had over the course of his career. Kim said that as an educator he believes designers must be goal oriented and process driven. On raising the bar and exploring one’s potential, Kim also suggested that we must first know what is inside the box, to be able to think outside of it.
“Henry’s lecture was just like his classes at SCAD — deep-thinking, fast speech peppered with colorful language. It was an incredible reminder of the role of design in the modern world,” said Dikssha Dinesh, a fourth-year graphic design student.
Henry is currently the senior global design director at The Coca-Cola Co. in Atlanta.
The event was attended by SCAD students and fans of design in the city. Since Kim has been a professor and associate chair of the graphic design department at SCAD Atlanta, students, faculty and alumni showed up to support their friend, mentor and teacher.
