Visit SCAD FASH’s ‘Pierre Cardin: Pursuit of the Future’
The Cardin exhibition presents 70 iconic ensembles from 1950s to present
SCAD FASH presents a monograph on the extraordinary French-Italian designer Pierre Cardin in their latest retrospective exhibition, “Pierre Cardin: Pursuit of the Future.” The installment opened earlier this week and will be on view until Sept. 30. An opening reception for the SCAD community will be on April 12 from 7-8 p.m., and will feature two representatives from the House of Cardin. Cardin played a legendary part in the fashion and design industry—now SCAD students have the privilege to witness his creations first-hand.
The exhibition showcases approximately 70 iconic Cardin works for both women and men from the 1950s to present. The award-winning designer is known for setting the trend for “mod style” or “mod chic” in the 1950s and ’60s, creating geometrically inspired silhouettes that defy the feminine form. He was also known for his space-age, futuristic fashion accompanied by his fascination with the moon landing from the Cold War era.
Madison Umbaugh, a third-year fashion student, said, “I have been inspired by Pierre Cardin since I started in fashion design. He was revolutionary, and even today his designs are so futuristic and artistic.”
Cardin’s passion for innovation led him to venture into other design related areas, such as furniture, theatrical production, costume design, product design and jewelry. SCAD students will relate to the way a set of creative visions can sprawl out and translate into different artistic expressions. Tina Gancev, a luxury and fashion management graduate student said, “I just love the exhibition. I love the way the museum space is transformed to bring out Pierre Cardin’s clothes. It was very interesting to see how he has always been designing for the future, and even the designs he created in the ’60s. Definitely a must-see!” This landmark exhibition will provide inspiration for artists of all mediums.
Admission is free for all SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD Card, as well as all museum members. Open to the public at the cost of $10 general admission.
