The Connector recognizes exemplary film work done by SCAD students. This week’s featured film is “Drop Target” by first-year film and television student McKinley Benson.
The Connector: Tell us about yourself and you work.
Benson: I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but moved to Gainesville, Georgia about ten years ago. I co-directed “Drop Target” alongside my frequent collaborator Enzo Hui. I was also the cinematographer. As DP, I wanted the aesthetics to be very ’80s retro and also film noir. I definitely wanted the color palette to be vibrant, yet moody at the same time. Lighting plays such an important role in cinema and I really wanted to have fun with the lighting design on this one. We were really inspired by the suspense in a lot of the scenes from “No Country for Old Men”. And we wanted to combine that tension with the visuals and tone of “Blade Runner” and “Stranger Things.”
