The Connector
The Connector

The Connector recognizes exemplary film work done by SCAD students. This week’s featured film is “New Follower” by graduate film and television student Malcolm Patridge.

The Connector: Tell us about yourself and you work.

Patridge: I want to pursue a career in directing — specifically art direction. Telling a story in the form of set dressing and designing is fascinating to me. The intricacy of building and creating the fictitious world within the boundaries of the altered reality is what, to me, most supports the working elements of any film.

I co-directed “New Follower” with Avery Spalding and Connor Scott. The short-film is about the personification of technology and how no matter where you go, it always follows you. My team members and I wanted to pull from some different inspirations: “Get Out,” I, Robot” and the persistent conversation about the government’s involvement in wiretapping. We wanted the film to have a cold and distant visual aesthetic, getting mostly medium and wide shots and showing the juxtaposition of the actor compared to the world of technology. Overall, the film tells the story of a boy being followed by what he initially thinks is a person stalking him — but soon realizes that it’s all the technology around him, watching.
