Your guide to 2018’s summer blockbuster hits
While there are still a few more weeks of classes left, the excitement for this year’s summer movie season is already in high gear. Let’s take a look at the five summer blockbusters worth getting hyped for this year!
“Deadpool 2” (May 18)
Start off your summer season with the followup to one of 2016’s surprise hits. The Merc with a Mouth returns in yet another fourth-wall breaking venture, as Deadpool must create a team to help save a powerful boy from the clutches of the antagonist Cable. With the same insane action and humor from the first film and a whole new team of heroes to play with, this is sure to be another gut-busting experience full of surprises.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” (May 25)
The standalone Star Wars anthology films continue with an installment focusing on everyone’s favorite scruffy-haired nerf herder. This journey will be looking into the early life of Han Solo before joining the rebellion, including how he met Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and how he obtained the Millennium Falcon. While there is some understandable worry behind this release given its hectic production, there is still plenty of promise with its intent of being stylized like a Western. Add in some fun potential action and character interactions, and this could be another worthy installment to this legendary franchise.
“Incredibles 2” (June 15)
Possibly the most anticipated animated film, this year’s offering from Pixar is a big one to say the least. This entry will be presenting a flipped version of the first film, where Helen will be fighting crime while Bob is forced to stay home and take care of the family — meanwhile a new threat begins to approach. Featuring the old characters we know and love, plenty of exciting action and Pixar’s typical high-quality animation, the hype behind this sequel is well-earned. Viewers can’t wait to see what it has to offer (as long as there are no capes).
“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (June 22)
While some may have been disappointed by 2015’s “Jurassic World,” its sequel seems to be taking things in a drastically new direction. With a new series of threats about to hit the remaining dinosaurs at the park, Owen and Claire must come back to try and save them from total extinction. With a darker, more intense tone and some returning characters from the original “Jurassic Park” films, this installment may be just what’s needed to bring the franchise back to roaring success.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp” (July 6)
The last big sequel to look forward to this summer is a follow up to one of Marvel’s smaller-scaled adventures. Taking place in between the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” Scott is attempting to settle down and take on responsibility as a father, but when a new mission comes across his path, he and Hope must team up yet again. While not as ambitious of a production as “Black Panther” or “Infinity War,” this entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe still appears to contain the same level of fun and energy as previous works.
This collection of highly anticipated blockbusters are sure to make this summer’s movie season one to remember. Whether it’s a sequel with loads of hype or an independent film that will surprise us, this summer at the movies will have plenty to offer.
