Films are our mentors. That’s why film-going is as valuable to a film and writer’s education as are the programs of study here at SCAD Atlanta. Any professor will tell you, there’s only so much a student of film and television and dramatic writing can glean from inside four walls. Not to mention, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia is the top filming location in the world. The films that were produced in SCAD’s backyard include “Black Panther,” “Hidden Figures,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Pitch Perfect 3.” It’d be an embarrassment of riches if we didn’t have to be rich to see one of them. After all, we’re students and starving artists — to be cash-strapped is part of our charm.
Have no fear, free movies for your summer break, or quarter, are here! Yes, you and your bank account are in luck! Atlanta, aka The Hollywood of the South, offers lots of ways to watch your favorite movie stars under the stars. Or, if air conditioning is more your thing to beat the heat, catch “The Incredibles” or “Iron Man” at SCADshow. We’ve compiled a list of parks and places around the film capital of the world that feature free screenings of major motion pictures while sticking to your budget. Grab a blanket, your buddies and a lawn chair and kick back to watch cinema classics every film buff should see. From older films, like “Young Frankenstein,” to newer ones like “Black Panther,” Atlanta has something for everyone.
