The Royal Wedding Series is an eight-part series that highlights exceptional work by fashion journalists at SCAD Atlanta. The series was written entirely by students in Writing About Fashion and Fashion Writing courses, taught by Professor Linda Sherbert. The students were assigned to cover the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Each piece was written from a unique perspective and style surrounding the topic of the historic royal wedding. Comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding dress and how stunning she and her guests looked have been splashed all over the news and social media. From the royal family to the most talked-about guests — Victoria Beckham, Amal Clooney and Priyanka Chopra — we were left dazzled by the fashions they wore to this event of the century. It all seemed like perfection.

But now we shift our attention to faux pas of the dress code and other humorous fashion moments.

The dress code inside the chapel at the royal wedding required female invitees to wear tea-length attire that falls to the knee or longer. More interesting than dress length was the fact that the night before the wedding, Oprah Winfrey realized her beige dress would appear white in the photographs, which is deemed a sin at any wedding. Luckily, designer Stella McCartney saved her by providing a baby-pink dress paired with a Phillip Treacy brimmed hat.

Let us not miss the reuse of outfits for special events. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a pale yellow Alexander McQueen dress with Jimmy Choo shoes and a Phillip Treacy hat. The media reported this was the third time Kate had worn this dress, previously seen on Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday and at her daughter Princess Charlotte’s christening. While Kate looked angelic as usual in the dress, certain viewers were not happy about her wearing a shade of yellow that looked almost white, because, as mentioned before, this is considered sinful by anyone other the bride.

The iconic Posh Spice wore dark navy blue to the wedding and some said it looked black. But this detail did not attract much attention because some spectators shifted their gaze toward Beckham’s “miserable look.” Beckham always accentuates her style with a mid-smile that is pure high fashion. Some did not get it since they were tweeting about her going home as if she did not want to attend the wedding. But fashion enthusiasts recalled Beckham’s famous quote, shared by Vogue Magazine, to explain her expression: “I’m smiling on the inside, but I feel I have a responsibility to the fashion community.” However, she did not break any rules and looked glamorous wearing her own line with bright red pumps and a hat.

There’s an even more exciting fashion detail that most did not see on the spot. If you thought dress length, the reuse of outfits and off-white clothes left a royal wedding looking chaotic, consider this recording. A Twitter user shared an image she took from TV after noticing a wedding guest wearing the same dress that actress Parisa Fitz-Henley wore as Meghan in the Lifetime movie “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance.”

Perhaps this guest wanted the same good luck seen in that picture surfing around social media as a meme of Meghan with a friend 22 years ago, posing outside Buckingham Palace. The caption said, “A focused princess in waiting.”

If these events can happen to major celebrities, who are used to this kind of social gathering, it only proves they are as human as we are.
