Summer is coming to an end, and a quick one at that. Around this time, many universities and schools have already started back up so it may be harder to spend time with friends or family. If that’s the case, there are still a variety of options to choose from to make the rest of the summer a little more enjoyable.
Concerts in the park
Many cities offer free concerts on the weekends. These events typically have food vendors, games and activities, little shops or bars to hang out and browse around. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, drinks and food if you don’t want to spend the money. This is a great way to get out for a night, either by yourself or with friends and family.
Binge watch shows and movies
Netflix has recently come out with new shows and movies to waste time watching. Hulu has many shows from years ago that will feel nostalgic to many of us. Even Amazon Prime Video has some good movies up for members to watch.
My recommendations:
“Boy Meets World” — Hulu
“Doug” — Hulu
“Beyond Scared Straight” — Hulu
“Sweeny Todd” — Hulu
“Goosebumps” – Netflix
“The Twilight Zone” — Netflix
“Song of the Sea” — Netflix
“Coraline” — Netflix
“Buzzfeed Unsolved” — Amazon
“Kitchen Nightmares” — Amazon
“Lady Bird” — Amazon
“The Big Sick” — Amazon
Go to a movie theater
If none of the shows or movies on those platforms interest you (or if you don’t have those streaming services) be “old fashioned” and go to a drive in or local movie theater. Many amazing films have come out recently, the genres ranging from musicals to horror, and they are worth the ticket price. If your friends and family are busy, this is another great thing to do on your own.
Learn something new
This time is valuable. It’s most likely the only time you will have to yourself for a few months. Use it to learn something new. It could be a language, an instrument, new form of art or easy recipes for dorm living. Go to a thrift store and pick up some books on a topic you have been interested in. It’s easy to lay around all day and do nothing, but this is a great way to stay in the comfort of your own home and be productive.
Build up that portfolio
Finish a project you were excited about but left in the dark when things got busy. Submit work to wherever you can and try to provide yourself with the chance of experience. Put work up on a social media account of your own or start a blog specifically for your work. This will not only help you in the long run, but it will also provide a platform for you to look back at your work and compare it to your new art.
