The Connector
The Connector

Sequoyah Wildwyn-Dechter, a fourth-year photography student, grew up in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. His work spans a wide breadth of styles, techniques and subject matters, but always focuses on finding the beauty in simple moments. His passion is photographing people. His recent projects cover the body in motion, identity and the interaction of people and nature.

Wildwyn-Dechter: As a photographer who experiments different styles, I take inspiration from many sources. My style, and way I approach photography, changes constantly. Work that I made last year may be nothing close to the work I am making now — I may not even like it anymore.

I am always discovering new artists who have unique work. I emulate their style and make it my own. My current inspirations are Ryan Pfulger, who has photographed everyone from random models and his friends, to President Barack Obama and Tilda Swinton. His work speaks to me because no matter who he has in front of his lens, he allows them to be raw and natural. I try to allow that to happen when I shoot. I rarely pose and retouch my subjects.

Recently my work has included a lot of queer influence — from the artists I follow and from my own experience and personality. I look forward to experimenting more and pushing my work in new directions.
