“Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You”
Lin-Manuel Miranda released his book in October last year. The book is a series of poems written to inspire the reader each day. Jonny Sun illustrated each page, and though the illustrations are simple, they work beautifully with every message Miranda creates. The poetry book also made it on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
“Firebird”
Though Mark Doty’s memoir was released nearly 20 years ago, it still speaks volumes today. Doty’s book tells the story of discovering his sexuality. He focuses on his 10-year-old self, and how much of what he was drawn to resulted in negative backlash. The lyrical writing is beautiful and entraps the reader in language unique to Doty’s experience.
“Black Leopard, Red Wolf”
The first book of Marlon James’ “The Dark Star” trilogy sets up a world where a missing boy is being sought after by Tracker. Though the hunter usually works alone, he teams up with a ragtag group of characters to track down the boy who’s been missing for three years. James will visit Atlanta later in the quarter for a discussion of his career and to sign copies of “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.”
“Where Rainbows End”
Third-year writing student, Manav Chordia recommends Cecelia Ahern’s novel because of its unique story-telling. Through letters, emails and newspaper clippings (epistolary), readers experience the friendship of Rosie and Alex, friends since childhood.
“After”
Tyler Rheaves, another third-year writing student, recommends “After” by Anna Todd. The novel was published in 2014, and tells the story of Tessa and Hardin. However, instead of focusing on the relationship, Todd explores what life is like after the two meet. The book is part of a series, which goes on to explore other ways relationships can affect a person.
