As we dive into the insta-worthy sunsets of spring, here’s a few tips and tricks to get the best golden hour portraits:

Check your weather app

Find out what time is sunset, and plan your photo session around it.

Use a wide aperture lens

By using a wide aperture, you can get a magical or dreamy look in your shots. I would suggest shooting between f/2 and f/5.6 to create some bokeh, and even get some natural light flares.

Get out in the light

Place your subject directly in the light, letting the sun hit their face. Golden hour is perfect for getting soft and rich skin tones.

Use the sun as backlight and use a reflector

Position your model with the sunlight hitting their back. This can create a lovely glow or rim light around your subject. Use a reflector to bounce the light onto your model and enhance the lighting even more.

Include some shadows

With the sunset creating beautiful shadows everywhere, catching some can make your photos really stand out. If you’re shooting outdoors, look for shadows around trees.
