Fashion magazines to expand taste and knowledge
The ACA Library of SCAD offers an extensive range of books, periodicals, visual resources and magazines. Their selection is broad, offering publications on interior design, sculpture, business, art and fashion from around the world.
The valuable visual resources SCAD fashion students have are the abundance of unique fashion magazines. There is importance to having a better understanding of multiple points of view, in any culture and language, on their opinions and methods.
Gentlewoman is a UK-based biannual magazine that is focused on both arts and culture. It’s published by Gurt Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom and was launched in 2010. Throughout its pages, it celebrates modern women that hold purpose by offering the viewer their unique and personalized perspective on style and issues.
It’s a magazine that “showcases inspirational women through its distinctive combination of glamour, personality and warmth.” ACA Library currently holds the first issue of the year, number 19, for the spring and summer season.
The Gentlewoman is composed of pure high-fashion brands, well-known and peculiar ones, editorials with current trends and spotlights women who share their stories on the arts or fashion industry.
The Wall Street Journal magazine can be entirely defined by six words— fashion, travel, design, art, culture and living. It is filled with informative articles from the fashion industry, editorials and hand-picked professional profiles. The March issue available at the library is a women’s fashion issue, which tells multiple stories of fresh starts and reinventions. It discusses events such as Yves Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, replacing former director Hedi Slimane.
Tanya Mehta, third-year fashion marketing and management student said, “WJS is captivating with its beautiful, striking cover pages. But the other thing that makes me explore the fashion industry in a deeper way, is its articles and fusion of themes. I feel well informed and updated anytime I read it.”
Vogue Italia launched in 1965 and is the most influential Italian fashion and style magazine in the world. Published by Condé Nast and lead by Editor-in- ChiefEmanuele Farneti, it mirrors Vogue USA as a monthly magazine, but focuses on pure Italian taste and vision.
The viewer can witness Italian mode editorials, styling, photography, craft and art — a valuable resource to have since it provides with another point of view from one of fashion’s major capitals. Ashley Cornett, third-year fashion marketing and management student said, “I like Vogue Italia’s runway section, you can really notice variety and different taste.”
