The Connector interviews third-year photography student, Hannah Peña.
When did you start photography and what does it mean to you?
My mom got me a point and shoot camera when I was around 13 for Christmas and the first time I actually used it was when I saw One Direction on tour. I didn’t really have much experience going into it, but that really sparked my interest in photography. I then realized that I could bring my small point and shoot to all the concerts I would be going to.
What is your photography process? Describe the type of photography you like.
My love for concerts and photography is basically tied together so whenever I get the chance to photograph a concert I never turn it down! In addition to concert photography, I also enjoy doing long exposures, and various portraits. For long exposures, I use various props, such as a light stick, fairy lights and LED lamps.
Who or what inspires you?
My friends inspire me. I follow a lot of concert photographers on Instagram and I take inspiration from their photos and use a somewhat similar technique like they do. We all talk to each other and bounce off each other’s ideas.
How does SCAD help your creative process?
SCAD helps my creative process by doing photos that are out of my comfort zone. I usually stay inside this bubble but SCAD pushes me to go out there and photograph objects that I never get to photograph.
Do you have any advice for other artists?
Challenge yourself. I think the way you’re going to find what you really want to do is to try different types of photography, or different editing programs, anything. Then once you figure out what you’re comfortable with, that’s what you should stick with!
What are your future goals?
My future goals are to work in the entertainment business, whether it be lighting design, tour photographer, or videographer for an award show.
