Attending college in a foreign country can be such an amazing experience. However, when you’re not home for a special celebration that you hold closely to your heart, that can be one of the downsides.

Thankfully at SCAD, being able to celebrate your culture is something that is not only just allowed, but encouraged at the college, as they truly try to make the school a home away from home.

This was the case last Friday night, when students got to host a Diwali celebration at FORTY. Indian food was being served to all the students who attended, getting a small taste of what Indian culture is like. In addition to this, Indian music played throughout the ground floor at the dorm building, where many of the students danced and laughed joyfully in groups, while some feeling a connection to home.

Being able to share pieces of your culture with your friends and other students who may also be from different parts of the world, is both beautiful and memorable. It not only helps with foreign students’ home-sickness, but it does emanate pride on where they come from – especially when now living in a country with a different culture from your own.

Overall, the Diwali celebration was a success and can be looked forward to being held again next year around this time.
