A new decade demands new trends, lifestyles and alternatives but it’s all up to our behavior.

Societal elements have been reflected in fashion for as long as the industry has been around. Politics, the economy and technological advancements have all had some sort of effect on the trends and movements in fashion.

Something to take note of is that the moment these developments occur, our human thoughts and these events connect and move towards progression — quite simply, it can be described as creating an action to all of our reactions that end up manifesting in a physical or conceptual way.

The past decades have represented the rise of new trends in society, often initially considered a novelty. But as the industry moved along, these “novelties” ended up being variations to how the past generation controlled their reactions.

More than any other fashion apparel or accessory, sneakers were the highlight of the industry this past decade. Their infiltration first started through mad-colorful designs, constructions and silhouettes quickly adopted by high-fashion brands.

Arguably, the sneaker trend was started by the launch of the Nike LeBron 8 South Beach sneakers, released on Oct. 16, 2010. A sneaker that wasn’t intentionally streetwear was considered as such because it broke fashion’s main style boundaries. Flexibility of use was a key component of the sneaker because it had a sense of adaptability as a result of its all-around, vivid use of color.

Although the industry has repeated this same captivating sneaker aura several times, in this new decade we need to define and establish this generation’s very own, followed by the rise of new lifestyles that seem to revolve around our approach to music — how and when we listen to it.

In the past decade, numerous electronics that enhance our music-listening experience were created. Much of it was to facilitate when we decide to listen to music but, to apply such to a new decade, do we adapt the gadget to our lifestyle or should we adapt to its own?

Endless possibilities come to mind if we choose to adapt to a gadget’s lifestyle. It won’t be controlling us, but it will serve as a guide that may have the chances to lead us into new lifestyles.

This decade should start with the emergence of new trends, followed by new lifestyles to obtain those newer alternatives we are searching for. Sustainability was the center of attention the second half of the past decade, a concept that still holds room for improvement and development.

We should move past making these simply a movement but an establishment. Sustainable straws, for example, were included into our lifestyles, becoming a trend. Based on the past decade, for something to be relevant, it has to refrain from becoming a trend.

This decade should finally prove that this is what we wish to be headed for, with this mindset we are able to move into choices that mimic our thought of progression.

This new decade has a 10-year deadline in which we can use to expose ourselves in the nature of using our reactions in a controlled way that inspires innovation and improvement.
