A look through ‘Derrick Adams: Patrick Kelly, The Journey’
SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film opened an exhibition that taps interpretation of fashion through with designer Patrick Kelly’s work.
From Jan. 14 to July 19 visitors can enjoy how artist Derrick Adams commemorates fashion designer Kelly by fusing their work together.
The exhibition highlights Patrick Kelly, the first American to be admitted into the French ready-to-wear organization, the Chambre syndicale du prêt-a-porter.
Adams is an African American designer based in New York City who works with different art mediums. The majority of his work is influenced by pop culture, and demonstrates other ways to see self image.
Adams’ work in the exhibition is inspired by Kelly’s patterns for garment construction, which he used to create collages and sculptures. These collages include pieces of vibrant colored fabric that explain his view on pop art.
The exhibition also features mannequins with Patrick Kelly looks and cases with newspaper clippings, runway invitations, letters and other items.
Sydney Seabron a fourth-year film and television major said, “This is the first time I heard of Patrick Kelly and I appreciate how SCAD has celebrated him. I love how Kelly celebrates ’90s culture which is something different from what has been shown here.”
Kelly was a pioneer for ’90s fashion and during that he was the first to introduce the image of African American women on the runway.
