Visiting the Michael C. Carlos museum
Last Sunday, I had the opportunity of visiting the Michael C. Carlos museum at Emory university. This museum has the biggest ancient art collection in the southeast.
This museum contains a lot of rare objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, Africa and the ancient Americas. It was amazing to see how some artists were influenced by other artists from different places and time periods in their art work. I felt like I had gone back in time while walking around. My favorite objects were the Greek sculptures, especially since I was a big fan of Greek mythology when I was younger – so to see the sculptures of some of the gods made me quite excited.
Also, I really enjoyed seeing the art that I am learning about in my art history class I’m taking this quarter. It has heightened my appreciation for not just the objects’ aesthetics but the processes done to achieve the unique artwork, giving me a whole new perspective on them.
I truly think every SCAD student should visit this museum at least once, since it brings to life what students learn in some of their classes, particularly in their required art history classes.
