Fashion and TikTok: the most unexpected pairing of the decade
The app is a hotspot for fashion brands.
TikTok is a free social media app that lets you watch, make and share videos from your phone, and this is popular because it’s often made around a pop song. It might be new information for many, but it’s actually a rebranded version of the app Musical.ly. The change occured in 2008 when the two apps merged.
To use the app, you create an account and choose your interests — which ranges from comedy to fashion and animals. Once you’re in, you get two pages to view videos: one that recommends videos to watch, and the other is full of content shared by accounts you choose to follow.
For fashion related content, users on their accounts show off their daily outfits, share their favorite fashion brands and places to shop at. They are loved by many because their videos are mixed with songs that create an aesthetic and include effects that enhances the video.
Fashion brands follow this trend because through their accounts they have access to create fun and quick videos that show off their products. They can also share runway and backstage footage of shows as well as other otherwise background information about them.
Brands don’t only use the app to stay relevant, TikTok also serves as a place where they can find for their next model, sponsor or influencer. User @wisdm8 (Wisdom) became viral on the app when he shared his first TikTok video. After he published it on Twitter (@modsiwW) it gained even more recognition.
The response to his video was massive and people loved the 20 seconds of him showing different outfits he would wear to class, which consisted of well-fitted garments and perfect color coordination.
After several days, the Wisdom shared how Calvin Klein, Dr. Martens and the TikTok app reached out to him because of the video. He didn’t really share the brand’s reasons of contact but it shows that the 18-year-old might just have landed his biggest break in the fashion industry.
Fashion brands continue to dive into modern ways of scouting talent to help strengthen their brand and it seems staying on the forefront of social media is a winning method.
