Last Thursday night, ISland Vybz, a student club aimed at Caribbean students, hosted their first ever event, “Love you like cook food” for Valentine’s Day, to a great turnout.

Everyone socialized, munched on some finger foods and snacks and danced to Caribbean music blasted throughout the room by SCAD’s very own student DJ, Nate McPhee. There was also a live performance by Makumbi John and David Quampah, who go by the artist names, JAK MOHN and SEYY, respectively. They are both SCAD students who sang their original song, “Wanna Stay,” and the crowd was very enthusiastic about their performance, not only showing love for the song, but also support towards their peers.

Students of different backgrounds from all over the world came to this event, and though some may not have been quite familiar with the music, they danced along anyway, appreciating the Caribbean culture that was being shared with them.

SCAD has students from Caribbean countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and many more. Hosting these types of events help make international students feel more comfortable and accepted into their school environment — and the Island Vybz club did exactly that, while also introducing a new culture into other students’ lives.

This event was the first of many more soon to come.
