Every year can be identified by what type of sneaker people are obsessed with. Last year was the Nike’s Air Force 1, but this year is being claimed by Converse’s two-toned high top sneakers.

One of my closest friends said, “I bought the Air Force 1’s, not just because I saw them all over my TikTok and they were trending, but because they can go with anything. I treat it like a pair of flip flops: when I don’t know what shoes to wear, I’ll wear those!”

The most popular thing about the Air Force 1’s were its versatility and slightly chunky soles. It came in a variety of solid and color combinations, but the real fun of it lies in having the Nike Swoosh in a different color and being able to change the shoe laces into some fun ones.

But Converse quickly claimed this number one spot by having such a strong customization feature for their shoes, and that has caused conversation and popularity throughout social media.

People are personalizing their high tops based off of their favorite color combinations or music artist. Some also add an even more personal touch with initials, tiny phrases and shapes.

A friend of mine said, “I really like how I can take color inspiration from one of the albums of my favorite band and translate it onto something I can actually wear, and looks good. There are many ways of creating without altering silhouette and I think that is what everyone is seeking in fashion.”

Another who was inspired by Harry Style’s Watermelon Sugar song and had her custom shoes colored in bright green with a watermelon pattern and Style’s slogan done in initials: ‘TPWK’.

Converse’s customization feature is the meaning of expressing one’s self through fashion. It’s individualization, what the current era craves so much for. And they find it in these shoes.
