Every generation has an accessory that defined them, but with watches it works differently.

Watches are one of those items that is considered an essential to own for not only telling time but for sharing elegance and interest in one’s self appearance. It’s very certain that most of our grandfathers and fathers have more than one watch — they can be sure to have a mini collection of them. They never leave their house without one and have a style designated for each occasion.

But, there is something unique about Gen Z and how they approach this type of accessory.

Watches are currently lost in translation, possibly because they seem useless but also because our idea of what it means to own a watch whose price often burns a whole through our pockets.

It’s crazy to think about this distinction, how Gen Z purchases vintage designer accessories but at the same time is very interested in the DIY side of fashion that involves purchasing from small businesses and independent artists and designers. We likes the taste of both worlds, the expensive and inexpensive. Well, unless you’re getting your watches from Claire’s, time-tellers often lie on the expensive side.

I’m not saying that an expensive watches are useless. In fact, it can be considered an investment, just like with quality clothing.

With all these luxury watch brands available to us, it would be rather silly to purchase one willy-nilly, without any real research. Our fathers and grandfathers would be disappointed. After all, when the card is swiped and the day is done, we are going to carry more than time on our wrists. We are carrying our story.
