Movies hold such a special place in my heart, and I might love them as much as I love fashion. My heart skips a beat when I see incredible fashion in a film that is perfect for the character. I don’t like when the clothes take over the character and the plot gets lost because of it, so these movies do a great job at balancing the plot with fashion. These movies effectively changed fashion history, and they always leave me creatively inspired.

Funny Face

“Funny Face” is such an incredible movie with some of my favorite things: Audrey Hepburn, music, dancing, the 1950s, Paris and incredible fashion. Hubert de Givenchy custom-made all the gowns in the movie, and the entire plot is centered around a fashion magazine. The imagery of this movie is absolutely breathtaking and so ahead of its time. Even if you are not a fan of musicals, I would watch it just to be inspired by the gorgeous colors and prints.

The Devil Wears Prada

This movie is at the top of every fashion movie list, and rightfully so. My friends and I have watched this movie so many times over, and it is truly my comfort movie. It is set up as a 2000s rom-com, but it does a great job at showing the fashion industry without romanticizing it. It is said that it is based on reality, however, I cannot attest to this because I am not in the industry yet. The movie highlights how demanding the fashion industry can be and the sacrifices that are made to be successful in the industry. If you need a 2000s rom-com fix but want a little more drama and fashion, this is a great choice for you.

Crazy Rich Asians

This is one of my favorite movies because it is so well balanced, and it has everything you need to love a movie. As the title implies, some incredible luxury fashion is featured throughout the entire movie, and each costume perfectly fits each character and their story. This movie is made for everyone, so you are going to love this movie no matter what, but the amazing high-end fashion definitely makes it more fun for me.

A Simple Favor

This movie is a twisted thriller with dark comedy and constant plot twists that you cannot expect. The movie is not loved by everyone, but I really enjoy it, and it always makes me laugh in a strange way. I think every fashion major needs to watch this movie just to see how Blake Lively’s character wears different versions of suits throughout the movie. The power suit is reimagined and looks incredible on Lively. She really makes the suits her own and incorporates them into the character seamlessly.

The Age of Adaline

Another Blake Lively movie that I think is quite underrated but has the most beautiful fashion is “The Age of Adaline.” The premise of the movie is that a woman, through a freak accident, stops aging in the 1930s and now lives an endless life. The costume director did an incredible job at making it look like she is still holding onto those vintage pieces while developing a modern flair. The plot is very sweet, and at its core, it is a romantic movie. If you like vintage fashion, this movie can provide inspiration on how to incorporate that sense of fashion into your modern clothing.

Most of these movies are not based on fashion at all, but they feature great costume design and always leave me inspired. These movies do a great job at intertwining fashion with characterization, which makes each story seamless.
