I look for fashion inspiration in every aspect of my life. Watching TV shows has always been a way for me to escape reality and get inspired and entertained by unique stories. TV shows have made way for some incredible fashion moments that assist in the advancement of the story and character development. Here is my list of some of my favorite TV shows that have left me inspired and intrigued by their fashion choices.

“Mad Men”

“Mad Men” is known as one of the best dramas of the 21st century, winning 16 Primetime Emmy Awards among numerous other accolades. Their fashion focuses on the American fashion scene transitioning from the 1950s to the 1960s. Usually, a show will only focus on one era, but “Mad Men” does a wonderful job at making the transition realistic and relatable. Costume designer, Janie Bryant, used fashion as a way to indirectly show each character’s personality, insecurity and strengths. I loved that as the characters came into their own, so did their fashion style. This is a must-watch to see how fashion can be used for character development.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”

This comedy is one of my all-time favorite shows. It follows the life of a rich upper-eastside 1950’s housewife as her life turns upside down. This show is truly a love letter to the beautiful 1950’s fashion. Fashion is used to show the decadence of the lifestyle but also how so many characters use it as their shield. The fashion is vibrant, colorful and so full of life. Costume designer, Donna Zakowska, took full advantage of color, prints and silhouettes to romanticize the wonders of 1950’s fashion.

“Suits”

Before pursuing a career in fashion, I was set out to become a lawyer (I know, crazy). I have always loved the lifestyle of the lawyer and “Suits” definitely romanticizes the life of corporate lawyers in Manhattan. The men don well-tailored suits that can make anybody swoon while the women make their presence felt through mixing femininity with more masculine pieces. If you ever thought workwear was boring, this is the show to change that. The characters make formal wear look effortless and chic, in a way that does not compete with the plot.

“Gossip Girl”

We all know and love “Gossip Girl” for it was our look into the crazy life of the uber-rich. Though a lot of the fashion can be seen as dated, it was the epitome of early 2000-2010 fashion. The characters were unafraid to show their wealth through expensive clothing and accessories, and I absolutely loved that. Each character has a very distinctive style that is essential to their character and the way they go through life. The main characters, Serena and Blair, treat life as their runway. There is no such thing as extra in this universe.
