A lot can happen in six weeks and that is certainly true for the world of fashion. The holiday season and multiple movie premiers brought us some incredible looks and the industry was buzzing with news as we wrapped up 2021.
“Emily in Paris” season two
The controversial TV show returned to Netflix with its second season. Known for extreme style and “Americanism,” the titular Emily tries to fit into her new Paris life through her fashion. But for all the hype around the show’s fashion taste, the new season of “Emily in Paris” gives us some looks that are just downright outrageous. I am all for exploring fashion, but wearing colorful clown pants to the office just does not seem appropriate.
Even though the characters and the plot are problematic, I still finished the show in two days. The supporting characters often have the better style than Emily, which is some consolation, and the Parisian backdrop definitely did not disappoint. I still recommend this show to all fashion lovers, but just be prepared to be confused by some of the choices.
Pantone Color of the Year
Every year, we get a new color, and this year it is Veri-Peri.
“Displaying carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light. We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways,” (Pantone).
I love a good periwinkle, so I love this color choice. This color has already been taking over red carpets and runway shows, so prepare to see it everywhere.
British Fashion Awards
Just like the CFDA awards in the United States, the British Fashion Awards celebrated British and global figures in fashion. The event brought about some beautiful looks and some incredible fashion figures were recognized and congratulated for their work.
“House of Gucci” premier
The most anticipated fashion film was released with an all-star cast and a dynamic story. The visuals of this movie are perfect and I love Lady Gaga and Adam Driver as the protagonists. We get some great music and looks from the movie, and yet as I watched it I felt something was missing. Compared to the book, the film’s pacing feels weird and the plot rushed. I still enjoyed the movie, but it was a real disappointment considering the hype and the book.
The passing of Virgil Abloh
One of the saddest news of the year which truly shocked the fashion community was the passing of creative genius Virgil Abloh. Abloh, who was the founder and creative director of Off-White as well as the creative director of Louis Vuitton Men’s, left a profound impact on the world of fashion. He paved the path for Black creatives in the high fashion industry and always emphasized and supported fashion education for all. Before his passing, he even started a scholarship for Black fashion students through Fashion Scholarship Fund. He revolutionized what it meant to be haute couture, or high fashion, as he introduced street culture into all his work. His presence will truly be missed by all.
2022 is looking to be an exciting year for fashion. As the world (very) slowly returns to normalcy, fashion is making its way back to the forefront. I am excited for the future and all the industry has waiting for us.
