Illustration feature: Sasha Fillhart on musical inspiration
Sasha Fillhart is a third-year student pursuing her BFA in illustration at SCAD. Using her skills in digital art, she aims to work in the video game industry as a concept artist. The following illustrations, both done for a project for this quarter’s illustration course Illustrating Beyond the Page are both inspired by songs with animals/insects within their titles. Drawing from the lyrics for inspiration, Fillhart was able to create two distinct illustrations that are both gorgeous yet stylistically different from one another with a surface design application in mind.
Based on the song “Butterfly” by Crazy Town, Fillhart was particularly inspired by a section of lyrics that talk about having butterflies in your head. Also influenced by the dreamy aesthetics of the HBO show “Euphoria,” she was able to create an ethereal, vibrant piece of a girl obscured by butterflies that compliments the groove of the original song with a more rendered style.
From the iconic David Bowie song “Diamond Dogs,” Fillhart took special note of the commentary of the song, which touches on society’s upper class by referring to them as dogs. For this piece, she chose to illustrate two Borzois, an expensive, long-haired dog breed that are donned in pearls and a headscarf. Done in a more graphic style compared to “Butterfly” and only using three flat colors of black, teal and white, she also illustrated beads of pearls in the river that flows between the two dogs to further accentuate a high-class vibe.
