Gina Stavrou’s whimsical works, consisting of vibrant pastels and dreamy lines, are reminiscent of a modern version of the classic rococo style. She is an Atlanta-based artist and a third-year illustration major at SCAD from Cambridge, England. Stavrou, also known online as mindofbean, works digitally to create her beautiful works, as it allows her to access a full spectrum of colors. She finds her inspiration from everyday moments and feelings and enjoys creating her work with wide ranges of color to create a sense of magic.
Stavrou’s retelling of the classic story of “Pandora’s Box,” utilizes value and color to separate the different subjects within the piece. Depicting the escape of various evils in the world through disconnected skulls leaving a decorative jar, Stavrou instills a sense of romanticism in horror.
In celebration of Valentine’s day, Stavrou creates a wonderfully sapphic piece titled “Love.” Inspired by confessing feelings of love and represented by two cowgirls resting amidst a salmon-colored sunset. Our focus is placed on the two women through the depth of color and detail, with a lovely touch of a note that reads “I think I love you” sticking out of a revolver.
There is such a charming quality to Stavrou’s pieces that allows viewers to feel comforted with a sense of whimsy, fun and this piece exemplifies that feeling. In “Bug Collector,” a tattooed girl admires a caterpillar atop a vibrant lilac background, surrounded by bees and other insects. The piece was originally inspired by a Haley Heynderickx song of the same name.
