Renowned Style and Design Event to be held in Savannah and Atlanta

The Savannah College of Art and Design will host SCAD Style 2010, the university’s nationally recognized signature style and design event, April 26-May 6, at various locations at SCAD Atlanta and SCAD Savannah. This series of events features world-renowned artists, designers and industry professionals as well as highlights several of the university’s programs of study, including architecture, fashion, fibers, furniture design and interior design. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Throughout SCAD Style, students and the public will have the opportunity to participate in lectures, workshops, exhibitions and book signings from well-known artists, designers and industry professionals.

The following is a schedule of events in Atlanta (subject to change):

Monday, April 26

5 p.m., SCAD Atlanta, Welcome Center, 1600 Peachtree St.
Jeanette Montgomery Barron’s “My Mother’s Clothes” book signing

When photographer Jeannette Montgomery Barron’s mother started to succumb to Alzheimer’s disease and began to lose her memory, Barron discovered that her mother would return by looking at a piece of her old wardrobe. In “My Mother’s Clothes,” Barron creates one part fashion diary and one part loving memorial through still life images of her mother’s cherished clothing and adjoining personal stories.

“King of Vintage” lecture with Cameron Silver

Cameron Silver is the owner of Decades boutiques in Los Angeles and London, and is a premier authority on vintage fashion. He was named one of Time Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion” with clients including Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Catherine Deneuve, Kiera Knightly, and Mary J. Blige.

Tuesday, April 27

12:30 p.m. SCAD Atlanta, Gallery See, 1600 Peachtree St.
“Bettina: Ultimate Inspiration, Lasting Style” lecture with Bettina

Simone “Bettina” Bodin was a supermodel before the word existed. She served as a muse for Hubert de Givenchy, who named his first collection after her. This event includes an exhibition of photographs featuring Bettina in Gallery See, on loan by Azzedine Alaïa.

“Design with Retail in Mind” panel

Panelists include:

  • Brian Bolke, owner of Forty Five Ten fashion/furnishing boutique in Dallas.
  • Jaqui Lividini, moderator and partner in LWP, a New York-based fashion marketing/public relations company. She was named one of NY Daily News’ “100 Most Influential People in the Fashion Industry.”
  • Robert Rufino, editor-at-large for House Beautiful magazine and former vice president of creative services for Tiffany & Co.

Wednesday, April 28

“To Dwell in Design: DwellStudio’s Christiane Lemieux” lecture with Christiane Lemieux

Christiane Lemieux is the founder and creative director of textile company DwellStudio, a $20 million per year bedding and furniture empire.

5:30 p.m., SCAD Atlanta, Welcome Center, 1600 Peachtree St.
“The Real Deal: Branding, Marketing and PR” lecture with Kelly Cutrone

Kelly Cutrone is the founder of the public relations, branding and marketing firm People’s Revolution, with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Paris. She is the star of the reality TV series “Kell on Earth” and the author of the book “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside (And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You).” A book signing will follow the lecture.

“Undercurrents in Design” lecture with Robert Klanten

Robert Klanten is an industrial designer and co-founder of Berlin-based Gestalten, a publisher and creative agency that has published more than 300 design titles. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Thursday, April 29

“From Magazine to Monitor: The Rise of the Blog” panel

Panelists include:

  • Jaithan Kochar, style blogger, interior decorator and co-founder of lifestyle company Eddie Ross Inc.
  • Rita Konig, New York Times blogger (“Inside Out”), decorator and author of “Domestic Bliss.”
  • Richard Mishaan, moderator and founder of Homer design, a New York-based interior design/architecture firm.
  • Nick Olsen, blogger (“Decorating for the Next Great Depression”),ex-Dominomag.com deal hunter and interior decorator known for designing on a budget.
  • Eddie Ross, style blogger (Eddieross.com), decorator, former Martha Stewart Living editor and co-founder of lifestyle company Eddie Ross Inc.

A book signing of Richard Mishaan’s “Modern Luxury” will follow this event.

Friday, April 30

“Style Happens Here” panel

Panelists include:

  • Suzanne Kasler, an Atlanta-based, award-winning interior designer.
  • Mychael Knight, a fashion designer seen on Bravo’s “Project Runway.” He recently debuted his Fall/Winter 2010 collection.
  • John Lineweaver, founder of Lineweaver Design & Communications, providing design and brand strategies.
  • Jada Loveless, a luxury handbag designer.
  • Sid Mashburn, owner of his namesake high-end men’s store in Atlanta.
  • Amy Flurry, moderator and freelance editor with work featured in InStyle, Conde Nast Traveler, Atlanta Peach, O @ Home, The Atlantan and Refinery 29.

“Shaping and Expanding Your Brand” lecture with Laurie Ann Goldman

Laurie Ann Goldman is the CEO of the Atlanta-based multi-million dollar hosiery and body-shaping company SPANX.

“Dispatches from the Gilded Age: My 20 Years at Vogue” lecture with Julia Reed

Julia Reed is a senior writer at Vogue and a contributing editor at Newsweek. The lecture will be followed by book signing of Reed’s “My House on the First Street: My New Orleans Story.”

Tuesday, May 4

“Let’s Take This Outside: Outdoor Living in the 21st Century” lecture with SCAD President Paula Wallace

President Wallace speaks about her book, “Perfect Porches: Designing Welcoming Spaces for Outdoor Living,” a photographed coast-to-coast tour of quintessential American porches, and the process of conceptualizing, writing and securing a publishing deal for a design book.

Artist and curator Faythe Levine traveled across the country to interview artists and crafters in this documentary about the new do-it-yourself wave of art, craft and design.

“Why One-of-a-kind Matters” panel

Panelists include:

  • Vanessa Bertozzi, director of communications for Etsy.com, the world’s most vibrant handmade marketplace, and editor of Esty’s blog, Storque.
  • Faythe Levine, a Milwaukee-based artist, major indie-crafts booster and director of the documentary, “Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft and Design.”
  • Heather Ross, illustrator, designer and author of “Weekend Sewing.”
  • Amy Zurcher, moderator, and director of shopSCAD, SCAD’s retail stores which feature the best handmade jewelry, painting, sculpture and pottery from SCAD students, faculty and alumni.

Panelists include:

  • Matthew Mascotte, moderator and SCAD exhibitions coordinator; he is the former director of New York’s Elizabeth Dee gallery.
  • Caleb Mulvena, architect and principal of Mapos architectural design firm, which collaborated with Peter Marino on the Louis Vuitton flagship store in Paris.
  • Chris Parachini, green builder and a leader of the sustainable architecture movement.

“Behind the Screen: Bringing Fashion Online” panel

Panelists include:

  • Andrew Bevan, Teen Vogue’s style blogger and associate features editor.

  • Jennifer Hyman, co-owner of renttherunway.com, a breakthrough new business that offers designer clothes for rent at a fraction of their retail cost.

Roland van Kralingen is an internationally renowned marketing and brand management guru and author of the groundbreaking branding/marketing books “Superbrands” and “The Growth Engine.”

“More is More” lecture with Hutton Wilkinson

Hutton Wilkinson is the creative director and president of Tony Duquette Inc., where he continues Duquette’s business as a jewelry and interiors designer.

“Zen Style: Building a Design Legacy” lecture with Clodagh

Clodagh is a renowned designer who has created interiors and home furnishings in more than 90 countries. She is known for her Zen aesthetic and incorporating feng shui and sustainable materials in her green design. A book signing of Clodagh’s “Your Home, Your Sanctuary”, will follow this lecture.

“You, The Brand: Growing a Household Name” lecture with Thom Filicia

Thom Filicia is the founder of Thom Filicia Inc. He is widely known for his roles on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and Style Network’s “Dress My Nest.”
